Hyperbaric Chambers: What are they and how do they differentiate?

The UHMS (Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society) defines Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as an intervention in which an individual breathes near 100% oxygen intermittently, inside a pressurized hyperbaric chamber at a pressure higher than sea level (1 atmosphere absolute). It defines that, for clinical use, the pressure must be equal to or greater than 1.4 ATA.

Different types of Hyperbaric Chambers according to their differential characteristics: 

There are different types of hyperbaric chambers on the market. They are different depending on the pressures they administer and their structure. 

• Monoplace / rigid chambers:

Monoplace chambers are the most common. In most of them, the pressure cannot increase above 3 ATA. Patients can be transferred from a stretcher and the chamber is filled with oxygen under pressure. Some single-place models administer oxygen through a mask.

• Multiple/rigid chambers:

Multiplace chambers are used to simultaneously treat up to approximately 20 patients. These chambers are compressed with air, and oxygen is delivered through a mask covering the nose and mouth or hoods covering the entire head. The atmosphere is regulated and controlled concerning air and temperature.

Rigid chambers have a hard iron structure, which makes their transportation more complex or even impossible in most cases. The problem with rigid chambers is that they are usually very large and their installation and use require highly trained personnel. Another difficulty is that there is a potential risk of explosion in those that pressurize with oxygen gases and generate neural excitability at high pressures.
