On May 28 it is celebrated the International Day of Action for Women’s Health. This date was established in 1987 as a reminder to address the multiple causes of illness and death that affect women.

These are the 10 diseases that have the highest incidence in women:

  1. Migraine

It is a chronic disease that affects 10% of the population. It occurs more in women due to hormonal factors. For this reason it is common in days before menstruation and decreases in pregnancy and after menopause. To prevent migraine you should avoid precooked foods and hormonal contraceptives, as well as drink water.

  1. Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes in middle age is more common in women than in men. This is due to the hormonal changes that are triggered by menopause. By lowering the level of estrogen, the protective effect against cardiovascular risk is lost. This disease can be prevented by maintaining an adequate weight, following a healthy diet, exercising and avoiding tobacco and alcohol.

  1. Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are very common during pregnancy and after delivery, due to the increase in abdominal pressure produced by the fetus, especially during the first months of pregnancy. The best way to avoid them is to take a diet rich in fiber, avoid the abuse of spicy and alcohol and drink plenty of daily fluids. Hemorrhoids related to pregnancy and childbirth are usually temporary.

  1. Allergies

The use of cosmetics, dyes and perfumes that contain large amounts of chemicals can cause the appearance of dermatitis. Women who are dedicated to home labors can suffer from allergies because they are more exposed to dust. The best prevention is to avoid staying in contact with the element that generates the reaction. If you have an allergy, it is advisable to go to the doctor who can indicate the most appropriate treatment.

  1. Breast cancer

It is the most frequent cancer in women, with 25 thousand new cases a year and a prevalence of 5 years. If it is detected early and treatments such as radiotherapy are applied, there are high chances of cure. To prevent it, it is important to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and obesity after menopause. It is also necessary to have a mammogram once a year starting at age 40.

  1. Varices

They are venous dilatations produced by alteration of the valves. Its symptoms are: heaviness and tiredness, muscle cramps, itching that induces skin lesions by scratching, leg edema and increased temperature. Its appearance is related to a hereditary factor within the family and with a series of factors such as obesity, contraceptives, sedentary lifestyle, prolonged exposure to heat and professions that require a long time standing or sitting.

  1. Celiac disease

Celiac disease is a permanent intolerance to wheat, barley and rye gluten. It is twice as frequent in women. Its symptoms are diarrhea, loss of weight and appetite, alterations of character or fatigue. Celiac disease is autoimmune and genetic in nature, so it cannot be prevented.

  1. Diseases of the locomotor system

Rheumatoid arthritis is three times more common in women than in men. Fibromyalgia is another common disease in women. It produces pain in muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons and is associated with tiredness, sleep disorders, headaches, anxiety and depression. Finally, osteoporosis or loss of calcium in the bones also greatly affects women.

  1. Anemia

Poor diet and menstruation make women more prone to anemia. The most common symptoms are paleness, brittle nails, hair loss, irritability, tiredness or headaches.

  1. Psychological disorders

Women suffer more frequently anxiety problems, such as panic attacks and generalized anxiety, phobias and alterations in eating behavior. Insomnia is also more common in women.
