The importance of strengthening the immune system

In the midst of the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the Argentine Association of Hyperbaric Medicine and Research (AAMHEI) announced that it will study the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to strengthen the immune system in healthy patients to add one more tool to prevent the spread of the disease.

The AAMHEI noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) focuses on prevention and that is why it is key to strengthen the immune system, which is the body's natural defense against infections.

Hyperbaric oxygen

The beneficial effects of hyperbaric oxygen on strengthening the immune system are well documented.

Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy triggers strong hyperoxia, which consists of an increased arrival of oxygen to cells and tissues through the blood.

This direct supply of oxygen allows various physiological effects to be generated, such as reducing cell aging, reducing inflammation and, therefore, improving the patient's immune response. All this occurs because the Hyperbaric Chamber Treatment enhances the action of the immune system and modulates all the mediators of inflammation that are activated in different types of infections, such as the bacterial and viral ones.

People who receive Hyperbaric Oxygenation Treatment have a better immune response since they have a greater energy supply at the cellular level and less oxidative stress and inflammation, which is why it is possible to combat any disease more efficiently.

New applications

Recently, some researchers like Paul Harch began to study the effects that Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy could have on patients with COVID-19.

These approaches compare the disease caused by COVID-19 with the pulmonary pathology in the victims of the Spanish flu of 1918. At that time, there were no respirators, so hyperbaric oxygenation -medical treatment with more than 200 years of history- would have contributed significantly to resolve respiratory failure in some patients.

It has been suggested that, given the emergency of patients with COVID-19 and the limited resources of extracorporeal oxygenation, the hyperbaric chamber could be beneficial for infected patients suffering from distress and respiratory failure.
